Leo is symbolised by the Lion (universally known as the King of the jungle) and is the fifth in the signs of the zodiac. Leo is Latin for Lion (and Leon is Greek for lion) . Leo is one of the three fire signs, the others being Aries and Sagittarius. In the same way as Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, we find that Leo is positive in polarity. This means that Leo is generally an outgoing and extrovert character and Leo will draw on his or her own resources rather than resort to outside help.
In Greek mythology Hercules as the first of his twelve labours was tasked with taking on the Lion (Leo) of Nemea. A fearsome beast, Nemea had conquered all of its previous opponents. In this way the towering figure of Hercules was called in to deal with it. Since Nemea could not be defeated by any weapon Hercules resorted to strangulation in order to vanquish him, using no other weapons. What we see in the sky as the constellation of Leo was put there by Zeus in order to commemorate this spectacular battle.
